Jean-Claude Szwarc: La Perugordine

Tursac is 5 km from Les Eyzies de Tayac which has been classified as one of the worlds premier sites of prehistory and where can be found the caves of Combarelles, Font-de-Gaume, l'abri de Cap Blanc et l'abri Pataud and Le Musée National de la Préhistoire. The National Museum of Prehistory Les Eyzies de Tayac houses the most important paleolithic collection in France (stone and bone tools and the worlds premier collection of paleolithic engravings and sculpture). It is at present undergoing considerable extension works, which will give the museum a surface area of more than 4700 m2. (exhibition rooms, laboratories, activities, services, etc..)

La Perugordine, in the heart of the Périgord Noir, is in the Vézère valley. The Vézère Valley contains 147 prehistoric site and 25 decorated caves. It flows from its source in the Massif Central to the Dordogne River (about 190km). The magical Vézère valley, witness to human occupation for 400,000 years and classed as a world heritage site by UNESCO, covers an area of more than 50 kilometres where the most celebrated and important European prehistoric sites can be discovered. Other sites of interest in close proximity are the famous Lascaux caves Montignac (17 km), the Château de Losse and l'Espace Cro-Magnon du Thot at Thonac (14km), Sarlat the ancient capital of the Périgord Noir (20 km), and the troglodyte dwellings of the Roque St Christophe which retraces 55,000 years of occupation on 800 metres of rock face at Le Moustier (3 km). Saint Léon sur Vézère (8km), dominated by the côte de Jor, (magnificent panorama) is classed as one of the most beautiful villages of France, not far from there is the château de Chabans. At Le Bugue (16km), ‘door to the Vézère’ is the reconstructed village le Bournat which transports back in time to 1900. This village authentically reproduces village life in that century with its’ artisans, shopkeepers and farmers going about their daily routines. Near to the village Le Bournat is the aquarium of the Périgord Noir and the subterranean Gouffre de Proumeyssac the largest crater to explore in the Périgord. Finally at Limeuil (24km), a very pretty village, one can witness the majestic meeting of the Dordogne and the Vézère rivers.

Shannon Daly: Lagland

THE AREA:
North-east takes you into the Charente famous for its cognac and pineau. Angouleme with its cathedral and ramparts is the capital. Nearby is the region of the Horte Tardoire . Visit the old watermills or go canoeing on the Tardoire river. Going south-west you enter the Dordogne or Perigord region renowned for its truffles, walnuts and cep mushrooms as well as its many castles and the famous Lascaux prehistoric cave paintings.
The protected nature site at Argentine is part of the Perigord and Limousin Natural Park. Why not take a stroll up to the limestone plateau, (20mins), and listen to skylarks and nightingales singing. There is a signposted walk which points out different features of the plateau including rare orchids, old quarry caves, the elusive green lizard and an old ruined chateau which has a legend of its own!
Other sites of interest include the ancient peat bogs at Tourbieres with the Eco museum and the wild orchid garden Limadore at Cercles.

Lots of different gardens to visit. Wild or formal its your choice. I like the little medieval garden at Dignac with all the herbs and medicinal plants of yesteryear. Information on gardens in the area will be available in the property.
Nature parks - spend the day relaxing by the many lakes and woodland parks in the area such as the Lakes at Jemaye and St Estephe.
From early April orchids start to flower at Argentine which is a protected site set in the Perigord and Limousin Nature Park, 1km from property.
What seems like a million Orchis Morio spread a purple carpet across the limestone plateau. There are 24 different species of orchid recorded at Argentine.
In the second week of May you can usually see Lady, Pyramidal and Fly orchids coming into flower all along the hedgerows on the road to Lagland.
In the grassland at Lagland you can find Orchis Morio (green-winged), a few Pyramidals and the Burnt orchid which is one of my favourites.

Neill and Teresa Weatherill: Les Rossignols d’Ancheyra

THE AREA: Jumilhac Le Grand, boasts a magnificent château. Swimming lakes (Rouffiac) and rivers (canoeing at Brantome). Golf courses near Limoges and Perigueux. Thiviers, our local town is known as the Foie Gras capital and is a 20 minute drive away. The local cuisine includes Limousin beef, foie gras, duck, walnuts and apples. The Saturday morning market at Thiviers is not to be missed with its huge variety of fresh food, vegetables, flowers, clothes, wine, cheeses and fish and live music. Fishing permits are available in Thiviers at the local fishing tackle shop on the RN 21 road. Trout is only one of a number of fish that may be caught and which are kept well stocked by local enthusiasts.

Perigueux: (capital of the Dordogne) is very interesting and beautiful and has a good selection of shops. The market days are Wednesday and Saturday (mornings). There is a good choice of cafes and restaurants and many serve a three course lunch from about 12 euros. It has become famous around the world not just because of its history but for the gastronomic specialties, notably truffles, foie gras, honey and liqueurs. There is much to see and do such as the St-Front district; the cathedral; Musée du Périgord and the twice-weekly market that covers most of the central boulevards and pedestrian quarter.

Jean de Cole: is one of the most beautiful sites of the region, nestled in the lush hills between Limoges and Périgueux on the road from Thiviers to Brantome. This little village in Perigord is an amazing architectural masterpiece. It owns the title of "finest roofs in France" and is renowned as one of the most beautiful villages in France. There are several good restaurants.

Lake Rouffiac: Many facilities include a sandy beach, swimming, water skiing, sailing, tennis, climbing walls and restaurants. Perfect for young children or teenagers.

Grotte de Villars caves: are a maze of tunnels running about 13 kms and form the largest network in the Perigord. As well as spectacular examples of stalactites and stalagmites, they contain fine examples of Aurignacian paintings, including bison, antelopes and witches.
