A traditional Perigourdine house built in 2000 with a 9m x 4.5m saltwater swimming pool installed in 2007. The property is situated in the quiet village of Marcillac, just a five minute drive from the beautiful town of Sarlat La Caneda and a twenty minute drive from the banks of the Dordogne. Set in gardens of just under an acre, the three bedroomed house comfortably sleeps six to eight people. The gardens face south-west, overlooking a quiet walnut orchard and are next to a small wood.

You enter the house into a large reception area and cloakroom, which opens onto an open plan, modern living room and dining area, complete with an oak dining table which seats 8. A TV and DVD player keeps the kids happy! French doors from the dining area open onto a wrought iron railed terrace. A real sun trap, the terrace houses a stone barbeque for alfresco dining! A modern, fitted kitchen gives you all the essential amenities - electric oven, gas hob, microwave, washing machine and freezer and fridge for keeping the Kronenbourg cool! The remainder of the ground floor is taken up by the master bedroom, complete with en-suite bathroom, and a wc. Walking up the wooden, winding staircase takes you to the first floor. Two spacious bedrooms, each containing one double bed and a single bed, are separated by a dressing room, with a full size iron and ironing board, and a further wc, both of which are housed off a large landing. Each bedroom has views of the pool from their Velux windows and has its own en-suite shower and wash basin. The pool is clearly visible from the house and terrace making it easier to supervise the younger swimmers.

   Location

Sarlat la Caneda - described in Wikipedia as "one of the most attractive and alluring towns in South West France," and listed by France as a future nomination as a World Heritage site, is undoubtedly where you will enjoy most of your evenings. It is a medieval town, based around an old square, which at night time is bustling with street entertainers and artists. Gift shops and les caves will also keep you busy! It has a vast array of bars, brasseries and restaurants – mainly selling the regional specialities of duck, foie gras and the towns very own Sarladaise Potatoes! You’ll never go hungry. A bustling market is held in the old town every Saturday. There is a vast choice of places to see when in the area, from the views from the cliff top village of Domme, to the gabares on the river at La Roque Gageac - both incidentally listed in "Les Plus Beaux Villages de France". Numerous chateaux cover the area with outstanding examples at Beynac and Castelnaud, both of which can be seen on the tourist balloon trips! Spend an evening at the candlelit gardens at Marqueyssac and include a walk on the belvedere - if you've got a head for heights! If you prefer a bit more excitement, quad bikes and go-karting are available just outside Marcillac and there are numerous canoeing sites on the Dordogne. The Indian Forest in Sarlat will keep the young climbers happy and a day out to Rocamadour (23 miles) will leave you with monkeys climbing all over you at La Foret Des Singes. The man made lake L'Etang de Tamnies is just round the corner (1.5 miles). The regional wine is Pecharmant but you are never far from the great vineyards of Bergerac and Bordeaux (St Emilion only 65 miles for a day trip out!)

How to Get Here

Ryanair and Flybe both run cheap flights to Bergerac airport from most UK cities. The airport is only 45 miles away and all the major car hire firms are available there. Alternatively flights can be made to Limoges Airport (98 miles) and Bordeaux Airport (130 miles). Brive (27 miles) is due to commence UK flights in 2008.

Our preferred route is the overnight Brittany Ferries crossing from Portsmouth to St Malo. This will leave you refreshed for the early start to drive the 430 miles. This is a lot slower than the plane, but allows you to bring back all the wine you can carry! Alternative crossings to Caen are available as are P&O ferries.

If you don't mind a longer drive, the Chunnel across to Calais leaves you with a 513 mile drive. Orleans makes a nice halfway stop-over!
