It is worth considering when planning your holiday this year that coming to France may be less expensive than you think. Apart from petrol being much cheaper this year than the highs we saw last year; and the great offers available from ferry companies and airlines, your meal in a restaurant will cost you less in euros. From 1 July this year the TVA (VAT) reduction from 19.6% to 5.5% comes into force. It was scheduled to come into effect from January 2010 but Nicolas Sarkozy, in return for a promise from the restaurateurs to create 40,000 more jobs in the industry, has brought this date forward. For the uninitiated and budget conscious, look out for signs to an Auberge (country Inn) they often offer better value, a superior cuisine and a friendlier service compared to that fancy restaurant which catches your eye. Appearances can certainly be deceptive when choosing where to eat in rural France; if you venture through the rather shabby door of a restaurant in a small town you may be pleasantly surprised at the warmth of the welcome and the high quality of the inexpensive menus on offer. What is more you certainly will not leave the table still hungry, the portions will be more than ample with the greatest challenge being how to still have room for pudding. Before you decide to grab lunch in a fast food restaurant, convenient though it is, compare the price of your pizza or omelet and chips with the menu of five courses (usually with a carafe of wine included) in that small restaurant with the rather unprepossessing exterior. |
